Yes..but they have a tendency to leak around the ends of the filter element and clog fairly quickly so you need to have a cheap source of elements (buy them by the case) and some way to limit the pressure that wvo is being pushed through them. Those reporting success with them cut thick felt washers to help seal the ends of the element and prevent particulates from leaking past.

Also be aware that most plastic water filter housings are made only to filter COLD water. So VO temperatures of over 90°F may cause them to become brittle and crack in less than 6 months. Filter housings that are made to withstand higher temps are available but can cost 3 times as much as the more common cold water housings.

I'm a bit confused with the use of the term prefilter.  Is everything ahead of the filters in the vehicle 'prefiltering', and everything on the vehicle 'filtering'?

I use a whole house 5µ filter at the last stage of my VO cleaning/dewatering process.  The only prefiltering that my system uses is bugscreen and pantyhose where the oil is poured into the upflow processor barrel.

The cheap whole house filter cartridges may leak around the ends.  I use Rainfresh© 5µ cartridges in a  Rainfresh© filter housing, and leakage can't occur around the ends by design, however it could perhaps leak if the cartridges were not the full 10" length.  Cheap bulk package cartridges are likely those which failed QC at the company, and should be checked at least for proper dimensions.

That is the generally accepted meaning. I believe it evolved  from trying to differentiate between the on-board "safety filter" and any other filter used to process VO for use as fuel.
