This is the Catch-All place to post questions on power generation using VO as a fuel.

I understand you worked on a co generation project. Has it been successful? I was looking into a 6.5KW engine to power a ten KW generator to run say 18 - 20 hr a day on veggie oil. The load would vary from 2 - 5 KW with the starting peaks of some motors from time to time. The total system would charge a battery bank and run the load on Battery power when the motor was down for maintenance. We have a 3 KW wind generator that will be put up some time next year.
I have found many web pages about different engines, they all look vary similar. So talking to someone who has been down the decision road before, I am looking for a little direction to a good source.

I have been a consultant on several VO co-generation projects. Most of those completed have been successful so far. True success IMO will not be proven until the 40,000 hour mark is passed. I have used listeroids for several due to their low RPM and potential for very long operational life.

I do not think you will be able to power a 10 KW generator with a 6.5KW engine. The archives of the Lister Forum  should be helpful in your project.  Quite a bit of good info there. There are also some very good sources for engines, generator heads, and other custom made accessories.

Shipping is expensive on the very heavy engines so where you buy one (or the parts to assemble one) is one that may include distance to the supplier.  They are getting harder to import into the US as time goes on. I prefer to buy the engines unassembled and put them together myself after thoroughly cleaning any residual casting sand from them. This is simpler than disassembling the engine to clean it..and avoids the "test" run done at the assembly plant...often with some residual sand in the oil.
