Best is a custom made tank that replaces the original with one that has a small integral tank for diesel and the rest for VO...filled through the original filler neck. But these are expensive.

Many who want to keep conversion costs low simply use one or two 5-6gal marine (outboard) fuel tanks. By leaving long "umbilical cords" (of insulated HOH lines)  they can be removed from he trunk for refilling on the ground and then lifted back into the trunk and secured with cam action straps. This prevents the inevitable VO spill and the resulting rancid oil smell in the car interior.

Dear Dana:

Thanks for being such a big help.

I bought a big tank, you can see it here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=230011162259&ih=013&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT

I thought it was a good deal for 56$.

I saw one guy had about an 8 foot fill hose with a fancy screw on stopper that I could use. It fits in my trunk perfect.

I'm pretty much a novice, so what could I have you make for me on this conversion,

i.e. a goldenrod? or radiator fluid heated tank pick up? how much are the instructions etc.

we've covered what I need before,

but I suppose atleast:

heated pickup, goldensucker thingy?

hose on hose, maybe insulated with home depo wrap,

hose wrapped filter insulated,

heat exchanger

finally injector heaters that I order from some guy in asia.

I suppose that wraps it up.

thanks so much again, I suppose I'm at the if possible, suggest what I can buy to get this rolling stage.

That was a good deal on a tank.

I will be on vacation with my family from Aug. 10 to Aug 24 mostly in remote camping/fishing/hiking areas. I expect a large backlog of emails that may take several days to reply to when I return. However I WILL answer every email I get during that period.

I have some components available such as Flat Plate Heat Exchangers and fittings. The lineheaters are made in the US...but need to be ordered from the maker. That link is in this post.

Sorry I can't be more help for a few weeks..we are leaving at 4 am and I need to get to bed.

If you have not read the 10 steps post I suggest you need to start there...and you will also need to make a prefilter/dewatering unit. This is an autosend file you can get from my website...so you won't have to wait for it if you order it while I am gone. Between that and the Ten Steps to a Basic Conversion my taking a vacation may not slow you down  much.

Camping coolers are another low-tech option. Inexpensive, insulated and come in a wide variety of shapes & sizes. My father has used a 12 gallon camping cooler in his 300SD for over 2 years now.
